I get a lot of questions over my coffee posts on my Insta stories. My coffee routine is a bit complicated and I’m okay with that. I love using a french press. I think it makes the coffee taste SO much better and since I only drink one cup in the morning the single serving is a perfect option for me. Over time, I have found that a lot of the nutritional boosters I was adding to my smoothies can be just as easily put into my coffee, without sacrificing the taste.
I switch it up, making my coffee a different way depending on my mood or what ingredients I feel I need to add. I am going to break down the different add-ons I use and why and share a few examples of how I use them.
Healthy Add-Ins to Give Your Coffee a Boost
MCT Oil or Coconut Oil: I started adding coconut oil to my coffee a few years ago after trying Bulletproof coffee. I couldn’t stomach the butter in there, but I really enjoyed the coconut oil flavor. I figured the healthy fats were good for me and I felt fuller longer so I kept doing it. Last year I switched to using MCT oil. I already was familiar with the Bulletproof products and after learning more about it through the Bulletproof podcast, I decided to order some MCT oil from them online and I loved it. It is supposed to help suppress hunger, improve brain function and aid in weight loss. I don’t know if any of that is true, but keep putting it in my coffee. They sell it at Whole Foods now, along with a million other types of MCT oil now. I don’t know the difference between any of them, I just stick to the one I started with.
Collagen Peptides: I forget why I started adding this to my coffee, but I have been doing it for awhile now. When I stop using this for a few weeks, I feel like my skin and hair starts looking dull. It could just be a placebo effect since I am a total sucker, but I swear I notice a difference. Collagen can help your muscles recover after a workout and promote flexible joints, support hair growth, improve skin elasticity and more. Disclaimer: This is made with collagen from pasture-raised cows. I don’t eat meat since I don’t like the taste, but this is NOT vegetarian.
Adaptogens: Adaptogens are all-natural herbs and powders that help regulate hormones and more. There is a wide variety of adaptogens and they all do something different. This article from Mind, Body, Green has an amazing breakdown of all the different kinds and what they do. I like to mix up what I use. I have cordyceps, maca and ashwagandha.
Cacao: A sprinkle of this adds a ton of anti-oxidants. Cacao powder also has iron, magnesium and calcium and is a natural anti-depressant.
When I make my coffee I always add MCT oil and collagen. Then I pick either one adaptogen or cacao. Finally, I add a splash of half and half and froth it up! (You guys know I love my milk frother, this one is my current favorite)
What do you like to put in your coffee?

I’m not sure if this is weird but I put a few drops of essential oil to my coffee every once in a while especially if I need to relax. Anyway, your article is really well-written and I enjoyed reading it! 🙂
